The regatta, founded in 1987, is considered the premier gathering of schooners on the West Coast. Boats come primarily from Southern California, but also from up and down the coast. The regatta is open to schooners of all sizes and types and is divided into two or three classes with take-home trophies for place winners in each class. In addition, the coveted America's Schooner Cup is awarded to the first to finish on corrected times regardless of class. There are also perpetual trophies for each class and a Bristol Boat Award as well as take-home prizes for Bristol boat, farthest port, and others. Schooners from 30 feet to 90 feet are sailing this year.
The Saturday race is not the only reason for the gathering. On Friday evening before the race, SGYC hosts a dinner, live music, and a Silent Auction. All of the weekend events raise money to benefit the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
