HISTORY: TMaid of Kent was built to the “Little Maid of Kent” design by William Atkin published in MotorBoating magazine in 1930. The plans are still available today from the family Atkin & Co.

Maid of Kent, a 30‘ Marconi schooner, was built by Willard Marine of Costa Mesa in 1962 and moved to San Diego Bay in 1966. Maid of Kent was a founding member of the Ancient Mariners Sailing Society (AMSS) in 1975, and she was pictured in the bicentennial issue (July 1976) of Yachting magazine as a representative of the new classic yacht organization (AMSS) in San Diego. Maid of Kent is the only founding flag member boat still actively sailing with the AMSS. Jerry and Marcia acquired Maid of Kent in 1981 and are the third owners. They have cruised Maid of Kent from Manzanillo, Mexico to the Channel Islands in California. She is also actively sailed in classic yacht races in Southern California.

Maid of Kent was completely rebuilt in 2017 by master shipwright Frank Townsend at Koehler Kraft boatyard in San Diego. She was replanked with sapele, edge glued over the original apetong frames in 5 months and relaunched two days prior to the 2017 America’s Schooner Cup, where she placed second in class.

HISTORY: Californian was built in 1984 as a replica of the United States Revenue Marine cutter Lawrence, which operated off the coast of California in the 1850s. On July 23, 2003, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed Bill No. 965, making her the "official state tall ship" of California.

Originally commissioned by the Nautical Heritage Society, she has flown the flag of California up and down the coast and in ports ranging from Hawaii and Mexico to the East Coast. She also represented the state at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The model for her figurehead was actress Catherine Bach, who was chosen because was descended from one of the state's early families.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego acquired Californian from the Nautical Heritage Society in June 2002 through a grant from the Sheila Potiker Family Foundation of San Diego. The California Coastal Conservancy provided the Maritime Museum of San Diego with a $300,000 grant to complete restoration of the Californian in February 2003. After the overhaul was completed in August 2003, Californian returned to providing sail training and sea educational programs up and down the California coast.

HISTORY: South Bayfront Sailing Association is pleased to have one of the most beautiful schooners in the world today. The Bill of Rights was designed by McCurdy and Rhodes who modeled her after traditional coastal schooners of the late nineteenth century. She was built in 1971 by Harvey Gamage in Bristol, Maine. From 1971 to 1997 the Bill of Rights graced the New England waters. In 1998, she sailed 5700 nautical miles to her home in Southern California where she joined the fleet of sail training vessels owned by the Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI).

Bill of Rights has successfully provided an amazing learning environment for character building with wonderful sail training programs from the Los Angeles Harbor to the Channel Islands; first as one of LAMI’s TopSail Youth Training ships and, most recently, offered by ATSI for adventure cruises and sail training excursions from Channel Islands Harbor to Santa Barbara and the Channel Islands. Over the past decades she has changed the lives of thousands of young students and program participants.

Today, the Bill of Rights is berthed at the California Yacht Marina’s excursion dock in the Chula Vista Harbor. Surrounded by a national marine reserve and at home in the southern San Diego bay Bill of Rights, the schooner is available for on-the-water educational programs linking education, science and art in an innovative maritime learning platform for all ages. She is available for day cruise and overnight life-changing adventures. We encourage all to Sail the Dream.

HISTORY: The original America put yachting on the map – it is why the most famous trophy in sailing is called The America’s Cup. In 1851, a boat named America won the Royal Yacht Squadrons’ 100 Guinea Cup given to the winner of a race around the Isle of Wight.

Her later career was equally as colorful – conveyor of secret agents, Confederate blockade runner, Union warship, Naval Academy training vessel, and the pride and joy of a famous Civil War general and politician. By her end in 1945, she was one of the most honored vessels in the United States. The original was destroyed during World War II, but this is a near-perfect replica built in 1995 at a cost of more than $6 million.

Replica or not, in 2007 the America’s Cup Management offered $500,000 for the America to be brought to Spain where the race was being held. The America was invited to San Francisco in the summer of 2013 to represent the history of this great race for Oracle Team USA’s defense of the 34th America’s Cup. Then, America was selected as the ambassador for the America’s Cup Tour, visiting sites along the West Coast in July and August 2015, and Mexico, the U.S. Gulf and East Coasts, and the Caribbean in 2016.

America currently is running whale watching and private charter trips from the Maritime Museum of San Diego.
